The Solomon Islands, nestled with the Coral Triangle, boast some of the richest marine biodiversity on Earth. Their coral reefs are not only ecological treasures but also vital to the livelihoods and cultural heritage of local communities.
Climate Change Threats
The reefs are under increasing pressure from:
- Rising Sea Temperatures: Elevated temperatures leads to coral bleaching, weakening reef structures and ecosystems.
- Ocean Acidification: Increased CO2 levels reduce the ocean’s pH, hindering coral growth and resilience.
- Sea-Level Rise: Encroaching seas threaten coastal habitats and the very existence of low-lying reef systems.
- Intensified Storms: More frequent and severe cyclones can cause physical damage to reefs and associated marine life.

Socioeconomic Impacts
With a significant portion of the population residing near coastlines, the degradation of coral reefs poses risks to:
- Food Security: Reefs support fisheries that are crucial for local diets.
- Economic Stability: Tourism and fishing industries rely heavily on healthy reef ecosystems.
- Cultural Practices: Many traditions and community activities are intertwined with the marine environment.
I visited the Solomon Islands in mid-May, 2025. Overall, the reefs looked healthy, but there was scattered patches of bleached coral. The dive guide reported that the bleaching started within the past few weeks, probably in response to high ocean temperatures. She has hope that, with the coming of the dry season, the water temperatures will drop and the coral will revive.
By spotlighting the Solomon Islands, I aim to raise awareness about the urgent need for coral reef conservation. Through my art and advocacy, I hope to inspire collective action to protect these invaluable ecosystems for future generations.
